Initially it provided basic training for the World War I units. In 1920 over 8 000 troops were stationed here. In 1922 the military base was renamed the Fort Benning, after Henry L. Benning, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.

During the World War II the base expanded to 798 km˛. That was even more than its current dimension. At the time it was home to nearly 100 000 soldiers, including 4 000 officers and 95 000  enlisted persons.    During the Vietnam War the Fort Benning was the site of the US Scout dog school. Dogs were trained here to detect ambushed in hostile environment. After their initial training dogs were transferred to Vietnam for further advanced courses.

Since 2005 the Fort Benning is known as Maneuver Center of Excellence.

Currently the Fort Benning is the home of both armor and infantry. It houses the US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, the US Army Armor School, the US Army Infantry School, elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and many other additional tenant units. The Fort Benning supports more than 120 000 soldiers, their family members and civil personnel.
