The Teruel 1
multiple launch rocket system was developed in Spain in the mid
1970's. The original variant was followed by the Teruel 2 and
finally the Teruel 3, which entered service with the Spanish Army in
the early
1980's. Around 100 of these multiple launch rocket systems were
built by the Santa Barbara for the Spanish Army. A small number was
exported to Gabon.
The Teruel 3
has 40 launching tubes for 140.5-mm rockets, arranged in two packs.
The standard rocket is 2.04 m long and weights 56 kg. It has a range
of 18 km. An extended-range rocket is 3.23 m long and weights 76 kg.
Both types of rockets are fitted with HE-FRAG or cluster warheads.
Cluster rocket can be fitted with 6 anti-tank mines or a number of
anti-personnel mines. A full salvo of 6 Teruel 3 launching vehicles
can cover area of 2 hectares.
A fire
control system includes ballistic computer, navigation system and
meteorological equipment.
The Teruel 3
is based on the
Pegaso 3055 6x6
general utility truck. Vehicle is fitted with a
diesel engine, developing 220 horsepower. This truck has an armored
cab providing protection against small arms fire and artillery shell
splinters.
Reload
rockets are carried by escorting utility truck, which carrier four packs of 20 rockets.
Rockets are reloaded manually by the crew.
