The Raad 1
(Thunder-1) self-propelled howitzer was locally made in Iran and
successfully tested in 1996. It is speculated that the Raad 1 was
accepted to service and is in mass production.
The Raad 1
is fitted with a turret from the Soviet
2S1
Gvosdika self-propelled howitzer. Some howitzers were locally
modified. Vehicle is fitted with a load assisting system and has
maximum rate of fire of 4 - 5 rounds per minute. The Raad 1 fires
all standard Soviet 122-mm projectiles, including HE-FRAG, HEAT,
cluster, smoke and illumination. Maximum range of fire is 15.2 km
with HE-FRAG projectile. A total of 40 projectiles are carried.
The Raad 1
has got no secondary armament.
Vehicle has
a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.
This
self-propelled howitzer provides armor protection against small arms
fire and artillery shell splinters.
The Raad 1
is based on the Iranian-made
Boragh
armored personnel carrier. The Boragh is a conversion of the either
Soviet BMP-1 or Chinese
Type 86 IFVs. Vehicle is fitted with a
diesel engine. The Raad 1
is fully amphibious with the minimum of preparation. On water vehicle is propelled by it's tracks.
