The LAROM multiple launch rocket system was jointly developed by Aerostar of Romania and Israel Military Industries (IMI) to meet requirements of Romanian MoD. It is an upgrade of the APRA-40, which is indigenously improved variant of the Soviet BM-21 Grad. The LAROM was revealed in 2000. This multiple launch rocket system was accepted to service with Romanian Army in 2002. Currently there are 24 systems in service. It is understood that Romania intends to upgrade its complete fleet of 160 existing APRA-40 systems. The Aerostar offers upgrades of any Grad systems to LAROM configuration, however Romania is currently the only operator of this system.

The LAROM has a capability to launch both standard 122-mm and IMI's LAR 160-mm rockets. Vehicle has two launch pod containers. Each container holds 13 or 20 rockets depending on the caliber. Primary armament is the LAR Mk.4, which has twice the range comparing with the Grad. Maximum range of fire with 160-mm rockets is 45 km. The LAR Mk.4 are available with HE-FRAG or cluster warheads. The last mentioned carries anti-personnel or anti-tank submunitions.

Operator can launch rockets from the truck cabin or up to 50 m away from the vehicle. The LAROM can fire single shots, partial or complete salvos. These multiple launch rocket system incorporated advanced artillery command and control system.

The LAROM is based on a Roman DAC-25.360 6x6 military truck. Vehicle is reloaded by supporting ammunition resupply truck.
