The new Grad-K is a modernized version of the BM-21 Grad. The launcher vehicle is referred as 2B26. The refurbished launcher is based on a new truck. Also vehicle has some other improvements. This system was first revealed in 2011. It was accepted to service with the Russian Army. Small scale production of the Grad-K commenced in 2011. Deliveries commenced in 2012.

This artillery rocket system is effective against concentration of troops, soft-skin and lightly armored vehicles, command posts, artillery and mortar batteries and other targets.

The refurbished launcher pack is based on KamAZ-5350 6x6 military truck. It replaced the ageing Ural-375D 6x6 high mobility truck. This artillery system is fitted with automatic positioning, navigation, aiming and laying systems. The launcher is aimed and all rockets can be launched without the crew leaving the cab. If required the rockets can be launched remotely from the vehicle.

The Grad-K is operated by a crew of three. Vehicle has brief reaction time. It takes 2 or 3 minutes to stop and launch rockets from travelling. It takes the same amount of time to pack up and leave the firing position. Brief reaction and redeployment time allows to avoid counter-battery fire.

Launcher pack is similar to that of the Grad. It has 40 launchers for 122-mm rockets. It is compatible with all 122-mm rockets for the Grad. A number of rockets with incendiary, smoke, illumination, chemical or cluster warheads are available for the Grad. The Grad-K can launch newly developed rockets with programmable warheads. It seems that this systems is compatible with the latest extended-range HE-FRAG rockets with a maximum range of 40 km. Also it should be capable of firing cluster rockets with self-guided multi-purpose submunitions. These have a range of 30 km and can be used against enemy infantry and armored vehicles. These submunitions penetrate 60 to 100 mm of RHA.

Launcher vehicle is powered by KamAZ-740.30-260 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 260 hp. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive and is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. The cab can be fitted with add-on armor kit.

Reloading is performed manually by the crew within 7 minutes. Reload rockets are carried by escorting truck. Reloading usually takes place remotely from firing position in order to avoid counter-battery fire.

Recently another updated version of the Grad appeared in Russia. The Tornado-G is based on Ural-4320 6x6 truck. The launcher vehicle is referred as 2B17. Comparing with original Grad this system fires newly developed missiles with extended range and more lethal warheads. First production systems were delivered to the Russian Army in 2012.

It is worth noting, that a but broadly similar system recently appeared in Egypt. It was developed by SAKR factory. It is based on KamAZ-43118 6x6 truck and is fitted with RL-21 30-round launcher. This system is in service with Egyptian Army and possible has been exported to some other countries. MLRS systems on KamAZ chassis with 40-round launcher have also been observed.
