The BM-21U Grad multiple launch rocket system is a further development of the previous BM-21K. The previous version was based on the KrAZ-260 truck, which is no longer in production. So the artillery system was redeveloped and is now based on a newer and more powerful KrAZ-6322 heavy utility truck. Both of these systems are referred as Bastion-1. The BM-21U artillery rocket systems is in service with Ukrainian Army. A number of these systems were exported to Iraq and Kongo.

The new Ukrainian Grad has a number advantages over the original Soviet BM-21 artillery system, developed in the early 1960s. The BM-21U has 40 launching tubes for 122-mm artillery rockets. A standard HE-FRAG rocket weights 66.4 kg and has a range of about 20 km. It is compatible with all rockets, developed for the BM-21 Grad, as well as newly-developed rockets. Maximum range of fire is up to 40 km with extended-range rockets. The launcher vehicle is fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS), which is used both for navigation and targeting. At a maximum range of 40 km rockets have a CEP of only 90 m.

The BM-21U Grad is available with a standard or extended cab. Extended cab accommodates all crew members of the launcher vehicle.

Vehicle is powered by a YaMZ-238D turbocharged diesel engine, developing 330 hp. It has a considerable cross-country mobility.

A battery of Grads includes launching vehicles, command vehicle and ammunition resupply vehicles. The rocket launcher is reloaded manually by the crew within 7 minutes.

There is a version of the BM-21U Grad, mounted on the KrAZ-6322-121 truck. This truck has extended chassis and carries a full set of reload rockets. This rocket system is referred as Bastion-2. It is in service with Ukrainian Army. A total of 6 of these artillery rocket systems were publicly revealed during a military parade in 2001. It has been deployed during the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.

In 2012 Georgia revealed an indigenous ZCRS-122 artillery rocket system, based on the BM-21U. It has an armored 4-door crew cab, that accommodates the whole crew. Its armor provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters.
