The Type 92 (industrial designation WZ 551A) armored personnel carrier was first revealed as a prototype by NORINCO in 1986. At that time many observed that the overall design resembled that of the French Renault VAB but subsequent investigations have shown that although there may have been some French influence the Type 92 has many differences in overall dimensions, weight and many other aspects. Vehicle entered service with Chinese Army in 1997 and is used in large numbers. This armored personnel carrier has also been exported to Bosnia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The overall layout and for mf the Type 92 follows that of the VAB. The base model APC is amphibious and armed with a single 12.7-mm MG and can carry up to 11 fully equipped troops. These are some firing ports in the vehicle hull. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system.

There is also a Type 92 IFV variant equipped with a 25-mm turret mounted cannon.

The Type 92 APC is powered by a German Deutz diesel engine, developing 320 hp. Vehicle is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. This military vehicle can be airlifted by Il-76 or similar aircraft.
