In 2017 a new Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) emerged in China. This armored vehicle is being proposed for export customers as the VN17. It is an entirely new design, rather than clone of Western or Russian designs. The VN17 is based on a VT5 light tank chassis.

This new Chinese IFV weights around 30 t. It is fitted with modular add-on armor kit. This new IFV is better protected than ZBD-08, used by the Chinese army. This armored vehicle follows the current trend for better protected IFVs. Most likely that front armor of the VN17 withstands 30 mm armor-piercing rounds.

The VN17 is armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon. There are also two HJ-12 anti-tank missile launchers. Interestingly this armored vehicle has got no coaxial or roof-mounted machine guns.

This new Chinese IFV is packed with modern optics and sensors.

The VN17 is operated by a crew of 3, including commander, gunner and driver. It accommodates around 7 dismounts.

Troop compartment is located at the rear part of the vehicle. Rear powerpack arrangement of the VT5 became an issue in attempt to make troop compartment in the rear part of the vehicle. Designers of the VN17 found a simple solution and swapped front end of the vehicle with the rear. So the VN17 IFV is driving backwards comparing with the original VT5 light tank.

Troops enter and leave the vehicle via a rear power-operated ramp with integral doors.

The VN17 uses the same powerpack as the VT5 light tank. It is powered by an FX0012 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 000 hp. It is mated to a fully-automatic transmission. This armored vehicle is very nimble due to its high power-to-weight ratio. The VN17 is not amphibious.
