The VAB Mk.2 armored personnel carrier was developed by Renault Trucks Defense. It is an upgraded version of the famous VAB. The original VAB was produced in large numbers both for the French Army and export customers. Development of improved vehicle commenced in 2008. The VAB Mk.2 was publicly revealed in 2010. The new VAB Mk.2 APC has improved protection, mobility and payload capacity over its predecessor.

It is available in 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. The 4x4 version is intended as a troop carrier. It can be also used on patrol and escort missions. The 6x6 has better mobility over rough terrain.

The new vehicle has a raised roofline for more internal volume. The new vehicle has improved ballistic protection, as well as improved protection against landmines and IEDs.

The VAB Mk.2 has a welded steel armor hull. Modular add-on armor kit can be fitted for a higher level of protection. Add-on armor weights 3 t. At maximum level this APC provides all-round protection against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds. The Mk.2 has a V-shaped hull which deflects mine blasts away from the vehicle. NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems are optional though.

The VAB Mk.2 APC can be fitted with manned or remotely operated weapon systems. It is being proposed with a 12.7-mm machine gun or 20-mm, 25-mm or even 30-mm cannon. Other weapons are also available.

This armored personnel carrier transports the crew of two and 10 soldiers. Normally troops enter and leave the vehicle via the rear doors. Crew use their own side doors. In case of emergency occupants can leave the vehicle through roof hatches.

This armored personnel carrier is powered by Renault DXi7 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 320 hp. Engine is located in the middle of the hull, behind the driver. Engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmissions. These APCs have a full-time all-wheel drive. A central tyre inflation system is proposed as an option. A cold starting kit (up to -32C) is proposed as an option. Amphibious kit is optional as well.

These armored personnel carriers can be airlifted by the C-130 Hercules, A400M Atlas or similar military cargo aircraft.

The VAB Mk.2 armored personnel carriers can be adapted to suit many missions. Proposed versions include weapon carriers, ambulances, command post vehicles and other.

In 2012 a newer VAB Mk.3 has been revealed. This armored personnel carrier is mainly aimed at the export customers. It follows the line of VAB series of APCs, however it is a new design rather than upgrade of existing vehicle.
