The Ural Taifun Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle was developed as part of a large Russia's Taifun vehicle programme. Sometimes it is referred as Taifun-U. Letter "U" in the designation stands for "Ural" truck maker. Another member of this family is KamAZ Taifun MRAP, also known as Taifun-K. There is a high degree of commonality between various vehicles of this family. The Ural Taifun was first revealed in 2011. Initially it was palnned that these armored vehicles will enter service with the Russian Army in 2014.

The main role of Ural Taifun MRAP is to carry troops in combat theatres where mines and improvised explosive devices are likely to be encountered. Alternatively this vehicle can be used as command post, armored ambulance, carry specialized equipment, weapons, or fulfill other roles.

There are two versions of the Ural MRAP. The Ural-63095 is a modular vehicle. Its cab accommodates driver and passenger. It carries an armored module at the rear that accommodates 10 troops. In theory the whole module can be removed and replace in order to repurpose the vehicle. Another Ural-63099 has a monocoque hull. It can carry 14 troops plus the crew of two. Otherwise specifications of both Ural-63095 and Ural-63099 are similar.

The Ural MRAP is also available with 4x4 configuration. The Ural-53099 was revealed in 2013. It has a monocoque armored body and can carry up to 10 troops. It is fully unified with 6x6 vehicles and uses similar components. An 8x8 version is also being proposed.

Vehicle has a laminated composite armor, made of steel and ceramic. It is claimed that vehicle provides all-round protection from 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. It has a V-shaped double hull that deflects mine blasts away. It is claimed that vehicle withstands blasts equivalent to 8 kg of TNT anywhere under the hull. Vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection system.

Dismounts enter and leave the vehicle via rear doors. Also there are roof hatches for emergency exit if the vehicle is overturned.

Vehicle can be fitted with remotely controlled weapon station, armed with 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun. Also there are firing ports provided for the troops.

The Ural MRAP is powered by YaMZ-5367 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 450 hp. This engine was specially developed for military needs. It is also used on KamAZ Taifun MRAP. Engine is mated to Allison 6-speed automatic transmission.
