The Type 86G is an upgraded version of the Type 86 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), fitted with new turret. It is broadly equivalent to the Soviet BMP-2, that was adopted back in 1980 and is no longer a premier vehicle. Still though the upgraded Type 86G packs a more formidable punch than the original Type 86. Older China's Type 86 IFVs are being upgraded to the improved Type 86G standard.

The upgraded Type 86G is fitted with a new one-man turret, similar to that of the ZLC 2000 airborne combat vehicle. The most obvious improvement being the replacement of the Type 86's non-stabilized and inaccurate 73 mm gun by a more versatile and effective fully-stabilized 30 mm cannon. It can engage armored targets at a range of 1 500 m, ground targets at a range of 4 000 m and helicopters at a range of up to 2 500 m. There is a launch rail for HJ-73 anti-tank guided missiles. These missiles have a range of 3 000 m. One missile is ready to fire and another 4 are carried inside the hull. There is a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun.

Armor of the Type 86G provides all-round protection against 7.62 mm rounds. Front arc withstands hits from 12.7 mm armor piercing rounds. Vehicle is fitted with an NBC protection system. So overall protection of the Type 86G is inferior to that of the BMP-2.

This IFV is operated by a crew of 3, including commander, gunner and driver. It accommodates 8 dismounts. However troop compartment of this IFV is cramped. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via rear doors and roof hatches. There are some firing ports provided for the troops to fire their individual weapons.

The Type 86G retains its Type 6V-150 diesel engine, developing 298 hp. Engine is located at the front. Powerpack, including engine and gearbox can be easily replaced in field conditions. This IFV is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by its tracks.
