The Japanese Type 60 was the first armored personnel carrier to enter service with the JGSDF after the World War II. It was developed in the late 1950s and production commenced in 1960. It is estimated that 755 APCs of this type were built before production ceased in 1972. This armored personnel carrier is sometimes referred as the SU-60. This APC is no longer used by the JGSDF.

The Type 60 APC has unusual design. Vehicle is armed with 7.62-mm machine gun, mounted in front of the hull and 12.7-mm machine gun, mounted on top of the roof.

Relatively thin armor of the Type 60 provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters.

Vehicle has a crew of four, including commander, driver and two machine gunners. Troops enter and leave vehicle through the rear doors.

Vehicle is powered by Mitsubishi 8 HA 21 WT turbocharged diesel engine, developing 230 hp. The Type 60 armored personnel carrier is not amphibious.
