The
Timberwolf mine resistant ambush protected vehicle was developed by
Force Protection Inc to meet a Canadian Tactical Armored Patrol
Vehicle (TAPV) requirement, which called for a protected reconnaissance,
surveillance command and control vehicle. Canadian Army requirement
was for up to 600 new wheeled armored vehicles. However the Timberwolf
was not selected by the Canadian Army. Instead Canadians selected a
smaller vehicle, designed by Textron with 4x4 configuration as their
TAPV. Also there were no
other sales of the Timberwolf.
The
Timberwolf is based on the
Cougar mine
resistant ambush protected vehicle. Its bodystyle is similar to
that of the Wolfhound, used by the British Army. It is also
derivative of the Cougar, fitted with a rear loading area to carry
essential combat supplies, such as ammunition, in forward operation
areas. The Timberwolf has a payload capacity of 8 600 kg. This mine
protected vehicle accommodates driver plus five soldiers.
Vehicle has
a V-shaped hull. Such design is intended to deflect the blast from
the vehicle. The Timberwolf provides protection against small arms
fire, artillery shell splinters, improvised explosive devices and landmines.
The
Timberwolf is fitted with a remotely controlled weapon station.
Proposed vehicle for the Canadian Army is armed with Elbit dual
weapon system, which mounts two weapons at once. A combination of
7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machinegun, or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher
can be used. It is worth mentioning that the TAPV programe requires
only provision for RCWS.
The
Timberwolf is powered by Caterpillar C9 ACERT turbocharged diesel
engine, developing 450 hp. Engine is coupled with Caterpillar
6-speed automatic transmission. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel
drive. A self-recovery winch is proposed as an option. The
Timberwolf can operate in climatic conditions ranging from -40°C to
+50°C.
