The Saur-1
armored personnel carrier was developed by Romanian Romarm as a
private venture to meet the requirements of the Romanian Army. It is
worth mentioning that Romarm has considerable experience designing,
developing and producing armored wheeled vehicles. The Saur-1 is a
further development of the
Zimbru 2000 with completely redesigned
hull. This APC was previously referred as the Zimbru 2006. The first
prototype was completed in 2006. The Saur-1 was tested by the
Romanian Army, but failed to receive orders. Romanian MoD purchased MOWAG
Piranha III C APCs instead.
Armor of the
Saur 1 protects against small arms fire and artillery shell
splinters. According to Romarm this APC can withstand an 8 kg TNT
anti-tank mine blast under any wheel.
The Saur-1
is armed with remotely controlled weapon station, housing 12.7-mm or
7.62-mm machine gun or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher.
Vehicle has
a crew of two and can carry 9 infantrymen. Troops enter and leave
vehicle through the rear doors or roof hatches. A number of firing
ports are provided for the troops.
The Saur-1
has a centrally mounted Cummins diesel engine, developing 275 hp.
Vehicle is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by two
waterjets. Chassis of this armored personnel carrier can be adopted
for a wide range of battlefield missions.
Variants
Saur-2,
improved 8x8 armored personnel carrier. It was revealed in 2008.
Vehicle is fitted with new engine and has improved interior.
