The RG-33 is
a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle, designed by the BAE
Systems and produced in USA. It is based on the RG-31 MRAP. The
RG-33 is available in 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. This vehicle is in
service with the US Army, Marine Corps and Special Operations
Command. About 2 000 of these MRAPs are ordered by the US Military.
Vehicle has
a V-shaped hull, which deflects mine blasts away from the vehicle.
Occupants use mine protected seats. Armored glass windows (or TRAPP
transparent armor) is extensively used in the crew compartment. Such
armor provides excellent visibility and situational awareness. Other
survivability equipment includes automatic fire extinguishing
system. The RG-33 provides protection against landmines, IEDs and
small arms fire. Protection can be enhanced with add-on modular
armor. It is claimed that the RG-33 is one of the most survivable
MRAP vehicles.
Some
vehicles are fitted with armored glass turret for gunners
protection. It is usually armed with 7.62-mm machine gun. The RG-33
can be fitted with remotely controlled weapon station.
The RG-33
MRAP uses Unimog chassis. The 4x4 vehicle has 90% commonality with
the 6x6 variant. Both vehicles are powered by a Cummins diesel
engine, developing 400 hp. Vehicle is fitted with run-flat tyres and
central tyre inflation system. The RG-33L 6x6 variant can be
equipped with a robotic arm, similar to that of the
Buffalo
MRAP. This vehicle is used for explosive ordnance disposal. Both
variants can be airlifted by the
C-130 Hercules.
