The Krpan is
a new Slovenian armored personnel carrier, which represents new
generation of modern armored vehicles. The Krpan is the
license-produced version of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch
Pandur II, built
in Slovenia, however has a number improvements. The Krpan uses 55%
of local components and subsystems. This APC was proposed to
Slovenian Army as a replacement for ageing armored personnel
carriers, however it lost competition to the
Patria AMV.
The Krpan is
equipped with remotely controlled weapon station, housing 12.7-mm
machine gun and Rafael Spike anti-tank guided missiles. Vehicle's
modular design enables mounting different weapon systems, including 105-mm fire support weapons
or 120-mm mortars.
Armor of the
Krpan provides protection against small arms fire and artillery
shell splinters. Additional modular armor protects against 14.5-mm
armor-piercing projectiles. Vehicle is fitted with additional spall
liners. The Krpan armored personnel carrier has a special double
hull floor for mine protection. All drive train components are fully
protected inside the hull. Vehicle can withstand explosion from 8 kg
anti-tank mine under any wheel. Automatic fire extinguishing and NBC
protection systems are fitted as standard.
The Krpan is lighter than
the Pandur II, it is based on. Vehicle is
powered by a Cummins diesel engine, developing 450 hp. It is worth
mentioning that this vehicle has up to 40% of components in common
with the Valuk APC. Development emphasis was on simple maintenance. Drive train components
of this armored personnel carrier are commercially
available. Power pack can be removed in field conditions in 20
minutes. It takes the same time to re-mount it. Vehicle is fitted
with run-flat tyres and central tyre inflation system. Suspension
and tyres of the Krpan automatically adjust to the terrain
type. Vehicle is also equipped with a self-recovery winch. The Krpan
APC is amphibious with minimal preparation.
