The KamAZ-63969 mine resistant ambush protected vehicle was developed to meet requirement of the Russian MoD. It evolved from KamAZ Taifun. Some sources report that it was developed purely as an experimental vehicle. The KamAZ-63969 was first publicly revealed in 2013. However in 2014 the KamAZ company announced that it will no longer produce military vehicles. So the future of this machine is uncertain.

The KamAZ-63969 is designed to operate in high threat environments. It is intended to carry troops to the battlefield under armor. It provides much better protection for the troops than non-armored military trucks. Also it can perform armed escort missions. The KamAZ-63969 can be also used as a command post vehicle and for medical evacuation.

This vehicle has a crew of two, including commander and driver. It can carry 10 fully-equipped soldiers. Occupants enter and leave the vehicle via side or rear doors. Also there are roof hatches for observation, firing and emergency exit. This vehicle has a payload capacity of 4 000 kg and can carry various military cargo under armor.

The KamAZ-63969 has an unusually glazed front part. It resembles that of Belgian SIBMAS or South African Ratel.

This vehicle is better protected than current BTR-80 series armored personnel carriers. Ballistic protection is modular and can be tailored to suit mission requirement. Add-on ceramic armor can be bolted for a higher level of protection. Maximum level of protection is against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds.

Vehicle has a V-shaped hull for protection against mine blasts. It withstands explosions equivalent to at least 8 kg of TNT anywhere under the hull. It is likely that this vehicle withstands explosions equivalent to 10 kg of TNT under any wheel.

Prototype that was revealed in 2013 is fitted with remotely controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun.

It is likely that this vehicle is powered by a YaMZ-5367 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 450 hp. This Russian engine was specially developed for military needs. It is mated to an automatic transmission, possibly Allison. Vehicle has a 6x6 configuration with full-time all-wheel drive. It is fitted with a central tyre inflation system and run-flat tyres.
