The Hipopotam (hippo) multi-role armored vehicle was developed by the Polish AMZ Kutno. It is a clean sheet design. Its development commenced in 2010 and has been funded by the Polish government. This armored vehicle was revealed in 2012.

The Hipopotam is not an armored personnel carrier, however it can be also used as one. It is planned as complement to the Polish Rosomak APCs. It is a license-produced version of the Patria AMV. This armored vehicle is intended to suit many specialized roles. The Hipopotam has large internal volume and a 5 t cargo capacity. It might be used as armored ambulance, engineering vehicle, logistic vehicle, air defense missile carrier, specialized equipment carrier and so on. The smaller Rosomak APC lacks internal volume for these applications.

The Hipopotam weights between 21 and 32 t depending on configuration. Hull of this vehicle is of steel and composite armor construction. It provides all-round protection against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds and artillery fragments. Vehicle has a V-shaped hull and withstands 10 kg anti-tank mine blasts. The Hipopotam is also fitted with SSP-1 Obra countermeasures system, which reduces the chance of being hit by enemy anti-tank guided weapons with semi-automatic guidance. It is broadly similar to the Russian Shtora-1. The Hipopotam is also fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

This multi-role vehicle is fitted with remotely controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun. Crew enter and leave the vehicle via the rear doors or roof hatches.

The Polish Hipopotam 8x8 multi-role armored vehicle is powered by a Deutz TCS 2015 V08 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 600 hp. It is mated with Allison 7-speed automatic transmission. This vehicle has good cross-country mobility. It is equipped with a central tyre inflation system and blast resistant tyres. A self-recovery winch is fitted as standard. The Hipopotam is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. Despite the weight and bulky appearance amphibious speed on water is 10 km/h. Vehicle can operate at Sea State 3. However the Hipopotam looses its amphibious capability once its weight exceeds 25 tons.
