The Fennek
armored reconnaissance vehicle was developed for Dutch and German
armies. It is named after a small species of desert fox. Germany
placed an order for 206 Fenneks, and Netherlands - for 410 vehicles.
First vehicles were delivered in 2003, replacing the
Luchs armored
reconnaissance vehicles in the German army and the
M113 in the Dutch army.
Basic armor
of the Fennek provides protection against 7.62-mm armor-piercing
rounds and anti-personnel mines. Additional armor can be added if necessary. Vehicle also has
an NBC protection system. Engine compartment is fitted with an
automatic fire extinguishing system. Vehicle's infra-red signature
is minimized through special exhaust ducting.
Vehicles in
service with German army are armed with the HK GMG automatic grenade
launcher. Dutch vehicles are armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun. Both
weapons are mounted in remotely controlled stations.
Observation
equipment of the Fennek armored reconnaissance vehicle is installed
on an extendable mast. It comprises a thermal imager, day vision
camera and a laser rangefinder. These sensors can also be removed
from vehicle, and set on a tripod up to 40 from the vehicle. This
armored reconnaissance vehicle is integrated into the digital
tactical command and control system. It's collected intelligence is
displayed on the digital maps.
The Fennek
has a crew of three. It is able to operate independently for up to
five days. The Fenneks are usually deployed in units of two
vehicles.
Vehicle is
powered by a Deutz diesel engine, developing 240 horsepower. The
Fennek has selectable two or four wheels drive. It is fitted
with a centralized tyre inflation system, to suit terrain
conditions. Fennek is also fitted with a recovery winch. Vehicle is
not amphibious.
