The CV90 Armadillo heavy armored personnel carrier was developed by BAE Systems as a private venture. Prototype was revealed in 2010. This armored vehicle is based on the proven CV90 infantry fighting vehicle. As of 2012 the Armadillo received no production orders.

This armored personnel carrier is well protected. All-round protection is against 25-mm armor-piercing projectiles. Vehicle is well protected against landmines and IED blasts. Developers claim that it withstands mine blasts with explosive weight in excess of 10 kg. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system. It also has external fire suppression equipment. It is intended to protect from urban warfare attacks, such as Molotov cocktails. The Armadillo has a payload capacity of 9 t which can be used to increase protection to even higher levels.

The Armadillo is fitted with remotely-controlled weapon station. It can be armed with 7.62-mm, 12.7-mm machine guns, or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. The remotely-controlled weapon station can accommodate heavier weapons up to 35-mm caliber.

Vehicle has a crew of three and provides seating for up to 8 fully-equipped troops. Troops enter or leave the vehicle via the rear ramp.

The Armadillo uses powerplant and suspension components of the CV90 IFV. Vehicle is powered by Scania DI-16 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 800 hp.

Later a version of the Armadillo was revealed, fitted with a superstructure, which provides additional room for commander and troops, as well as additional space for equipment. This superstructure with mission compartment is modular. Its roof can be unbolted and different mission packages can be fitted. Other proposed versions of the CV90 Armadillo family include ambulance, mortar carrier, command vehicle, logistics vehicle and recovery vehicle.
