The Cobra
armored personnel carrier was developed by Turkish Otokar company,
based on their extensive experience in the design, development and
production of other APCs which use a Land Rover chassis. The Otokar
Cobra is a versatile vehicle, which can be adapted for various roles
and mission requirements. This vehicle is in service with 15
countries, including Turkey,
Algeria, Bahrain, Maldives, Nigeria, Pakistan, Slovenia,
United Arab Emirates and other. United Nations also obtained some of these
armored vehicles for peacekeeping operations.
The Cobra is
a versatile armored vehicle. It can be used as armored personnel
carrier or armored scout car. It is based on a US
HMMWV
4x4 utility vehicle, which is used in large numbers by the US Army
and many other countries. Interestingly the Turkish Cobra was less
expensive than
up-armored HMMWV.
The Cobra
provides protection against 7.62 mm ball rounds and artillery shell
splinters. Add-on armor can be fitted to provide protection against
7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds. Vehicle also provides a certain
degree of protection against land mines and side explosives. NBC
protection system is optional.
A wide range
of weapons can be mounted on the roof, including remotely operated
7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine guns, 40 mm grenade launchers or cannons
up to 30 mm caliber.
Vehicle has
a crew of two and can carry 9 fully equipped troops. Seating
capacity might differ, depending on variant and configuration. There
is a number of firing ports provided for the occupants.
The Cobra is
powered by the General Motors 6.5-liter V8 turbocharged diesel
engine, developing 190 horsepower. This vehicle uses a number of
automotive components from the American
HMMWV. Vehicle is
fitted with run-flat tyres, however central tyre inflation system is
optional. An amphibious version of the Cobra has been developed.
The Cobra
family of vehicles are transportable by aircraft or helicopters due
to its relatively light weigh and compact profile.
