The Caiman
is a mine protected, ambush resistant vehicle. It
was originally developed by Armor Holdings, which was later acquired
by BAE Systems. The Caiman is available with 4x4 (Category 1) and
6x6 (Category 2) configurations. The US Marine Corps ordered a large
number of these vehicles in both configurations.
The Caiman
is designed for missions including convoy, troop transport,
ambulance and so on.
Vehicle has
a V-shaped capsule design hull, which do not extends to the
engine bay. Armor provides protection against landmines, IEDs, RPG
rounds and direct fire. The Caiman also
provides protection against other advanced threats, such as
explosively formed penetrators. Armor of this MRAP can be enhanced.
Vehicle is fitted with an automatic fire extinguishing system.
Vehicles can
be fitted with various manned and remotely controlled weapon
stations.
The Caiman
4x4 is based on the
LMTV and Caiman 6x6
on the MTV platform.
It has 85% commonality with standard trucks. These trucks are widely
used by the US military. It was one of the reasons why this MRAP was
selected by the US Marine Corps. Vehicle has a simple and reliable
automotive design and is easily serviced. Price of the Caiman is
also relatively low, as most automotive components are produced in
quantity. This MRAP is powered with the Caterpillar C7 turbocharged
diesel engine, developing 370 hp. Vehicle is fitted with a
central tyre inflation system.
