The BRDM-3
armored reconnaissance vehicle is intended to operate up to 120 km
behind the enemy lines. It is based on the
BTR-80A armored personnel
carrier. It is unknown if this vehicle was accepted to service with
Russian army. It is worth mentioning that some sources incorrectly
refer the name for the ATGM carrier variant of the
BRDM-2.
Armor
protection of the BRDM-3 is similar to that of the BTR-80A armored
personnel carrier. Front arc provides protection against 12.7-mm
rounds, while all-round protection is against 7.62-mm rounds and
artillery shell splinters. Vehicle is also fitted with NBC
protection system.
The BRDM-3
is armed with remotely controlled 30-mm cannon and coaxial 7.62-mm
machine gun. It's 30-mm cannon has a range of effective fire of 2 km
at daytime and 800 meters at night.
Unlike other
modern reconnaissance vehicles the BRDM-3 do not carries
sophisticated reconnaissance equipment.
Vehicle has
a crew of 6, including commander, gunner, driver and three scouts.
Troops enter and leave the vehicle through side doors or roof
hatches. The BRDM-3 carries some reconnaissance equipment.
The BRDM-3
is powered by a KamAZ-7403 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 260 horsepower.
Engine and transmission are mounted in one module for easier
replacement in field conditions. The BRDM-3 has a central tyre
pressure system and is fitted with run-flat tyres. This
reconnaissance vhicle is fully-amphibious without any preparation. On water it is
propelled by a single waterjet.
