The BMPV-64
heavy armored personnel carrier was developed in Ukraine as a
private venture. First prototype was completed in 2005. This vehicle
is a conversion of the T-64 main battle tank. Ukrainian Army
operates several thousands of these MBTs. The T-64 was a very
advanced design at it's time and had never been exported. The
BMPV-64 heavy APC is designed to transport and support infantry,
primarily in urban areas.
The BMPV-64
has a composite armor, fitted with new Ukrainian add-on Nozh
explosive reactive armor blocks. Bottom of the hull was strengthened
for improved mine protection. Tracks of the BMPV-64 survive 4 kg
anti-tank mine blast. Furthermore this heavy APC can be fitted with
Zaslon active protection system. It is claimed that vehicle has
protection equal to most MBTs.
Prototype of
this heavy armored personnel carrier is fitted with remotely
controlled weapon station, armed with 30-mm cannon and coaxial
7.62-mm machine gun. Vehicle is also proposed with a single
remotely-controlled 12.7-mm machine gun.
Engine of
the BMPV-64 is located at the front. Designers swapped front end of
the vehicle with the rear, so this heavy APC is actually driving
backwards comparing with the T-64. The same solution was used on
Jordanian
Temsah. A front-mounted engine provides additional protection
and made space in the rear for the troops. Occupants enter and exit
the vehicle via the rear doors.
The BMPV-64
is powered by the 5TDF multi-fuel diesel engine, developing 700 hp.
It is original engine of the T-64 MBT, however it is very unreliable
and has short service life. Vehicle is also proposed with Ukrainian
6TD diesel, developing 1 000 hp.
A number of
variants are proposed, such as command vehicle, 120-mm mortar
carrier, recovery vehicle, multiple launch rocket system and other.
