The BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle is an improved version of the BMD-4. It has new chassis and a number of improvements over its predecessor. The BMD-4M was revealed in 2008. The first batch of 8 vehicles was delivered to the Russian air assault divisions in 2014. This machine is also proposed for export customers.

The BMD-4M can be paradropped from medium military cargo aircraft. Once on the ground it provides fire support for dismounted airborne troops. It also acts as an armored transport vehicle.

This airborne combat vehicle has a relatively thin armor due to strict weight requirements. Its armor provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. The BMD-4M can be fitted with add-on armor kit for improved protection. Vehicle is also equipped with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

The BMD-4M has light armor, however its powerful weapons give a good chance to engage enemy armored vehicles. The main emphasis is stressed on direct fire support. The BMD-4M has the same armament as its predecessor. It is armed with a 100-mm gun and coaxial 30-mm automatic cannon. The 100-mm gun is completed with an autoloader. Maximum rate of fire is 10-15 rounds per minute. The 100-mm gun can also fire Bastion laser-guided anti-tank missiles in the same manner as ordinary projectiles. These missiles have a range of up to 5.5 km and can also target helicopters. The BMD-4M is also fitted with new digital fire control system.

This airborne combat vehicle has a crew of two and accommodates 6 troops. Firing ports were deleted in order to increase protection.

The BMD-4M has a completely new chassis. It is powered by a more powerful UTD-29 diesel engine, developing 500 hp. The same engine is used on the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. It is a more modern and more powerful engine, comparing with the 2V-06 diesel of the BMD-3 and BMD-4. The BMD-4M has improved mobility over its predecessors. This ACV has a hydropneumatic suspension with variable height control. It also allows the vehicle to lean in any direction. Such suspension also allows the vehicle to be paradropped on platforms. The BMD-4M is amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. The Il-76 cargo aircraft can carry two of these ACVs.
