A new armored personnel carrier is being developed in Thailand. Its unofficial name is Black Widow Spider. It is being developed by Thai MoD research and development agency (DTI) for the Royal Thai Army and possibly for export. It is the first major military vehicle programe in Thailand. Mockup of this APC was first publicly revealed in 2013. In the same year it was announced that a British Ricardo company joined development of this armored vehicle.

Layout of the Blach Widow Spider is similar to most modern Western 8x8 wheeled APCs. Recently Thailand acquired 250 BTR-3E1 8x8 armored personnel carriers from Ukraine and placed an order for additional vehicles. So development of the new APC might have been also influenced by experience gained operating Ukrainian APCs.

This armored personnel carrier has a welded steel armor hull. The baseline armor provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Add-on armor can be fitted for a higher level of protection. Vehicle has a V-shaped hull for protection against landmines and IED blasts. It is claimed that this APC withstands explosion equivalent to 10 kg of TNT.

It is likely that a baseline version of this new armored personnel carrier will be armed with remotely-controlled 12.7-mm machine gun. A mockup of the Black Widow Spider was demonstrated with remotely-controlled turret armed with 20-mm or 25-mm cannon.

Mockup of the Black Widow Spider can carry about 12 fully-equipped troops, plus the driver. Once operational and fitted with weapons this APC is likely to have a crew of 2-3 and accommodate about 10 passengers. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via rear doors. Also there are roof hatches for emergency exit.

Engine is located at the front. It seems that developers are trying to use as many commercially available automotive components as possible. First two axles are steered. Vehicle is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This armored personnel carrier is amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets.

Proposed variants of the Black Widow Spider include command vehicle, armored ambulance, recovery vehicle and 120-mm mortar carrier.
