British MoD had a requirement for a new family of tracked armored vehicles to replace the previous CVR(T) family. Development commenced in around 2010. The new family of armored vehicles was developed by General Dynamics and was based on ASCOD 2 infantry fighting vehicle. The baseline vehicle of this new British family is the Ajax reconnaissance vehicle, which will replace the FV107 Scimitar. The Ares is essentially an APC variant of the ASCOD 2 IFV. It will replace the FV103 Spartan in service with the British Army. In 2014 British MoD ordered a total of 59 of Ares armored personnel carriers, alongside with a number of other vehicles of the same armored vehicle family. These include a total of 245 Ajax variants, including 59 Ares armored personnel carriers plus 34 formation reconnaissance overwatch vehicles. First two Ares armored vehicles were delivered to the British Army in 2019. These early production vehicles were used for training purposes. First series production Ares vehicle was delivered in 2020. All Ares armored vehicles should be delivered by 2024 and are planned to remain in service for at least 30 years. These new armored vehicles are produced in the United Kingdom.

The Ares is a specialist combat team carrier. It means that this vehicle operates not as an infantry section carrier vehicle, but as a combat engineer, battlefield reconnaissance or air defense missile team carrier. This vehicle will deliver under armor and support specialist troops across the battlefield. The Ares will be used alongside other armored vehicles from the Ajax family.

The Ares has a crew of 3, including commander, driver and gunner, and carries up to 7 fully-equipped specialists. Also there is a space for specialized and personal equipment of the soldiers. There are internal racks and boxes. More equipment can be stored externally. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via rear doors. Also there are roof hatches for observation, firing and emergency exit.

This new armored vehicle is technologically advanced. It has a modular armor and innovative protection against mine blasts. It is claimed that it is the best in terms of protection and survivability in its class. It offers high level of protection against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and mine blasts. Crew and passengers are seated on mine blast resistant seats. This armored vehicle is also fitted with electronic counter measure system, laser warning system, local situational awareness system and some other systems. It looks that the Ares is one of the most protected armored personnel carriers, available today.

Add-on armor kit can be fitted when needed. Improved armor modules can be fitted once these become available. The Ares vehicle weights around 30 t. With add-on armor its weight is increased to around 40 t. So considering its weight protection level of the Ares should be similar of a well protected infantry fighting vehicle.

The Ares is fitted with remotely-controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun. It can engage ground and low-flying air targets, such as helicopters and UAVs.

This armored vehicle is powered by a German MTU V8 199 TE21 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 805 hp. Engine is located at the front of the hull. It is mated with a German Renk 256B 6-speed fully-automatic transmission. The Ares has excessive power. During trials the test vehicle has towed additional 62 t weight over 300 km. So the this armored vehicle has a growth potential for the next 30 year.
